Hotaru is an orphan who was taken in by one of the Choshuu spies, Yugao. She was brought to Kyoto to pose as an usher for the used furniture shop, Masuya which is actually a hide-out used by the Choshuu revolutionists.
Hotaru, in her own way, is a shinobi. One of her tasks was to infiltrate the Shinsengumi headquarters by taking in the job of assistant to Yamazaki Ayumu. However, Hotaru's mission was not really that successful and she asked to be relieved from the whole spying business.
After the Meiji Restoration, Hotaru was taken in by a generous couple from Choshuu, adopting the name, "Nagata." She moved with them to Kobe where they run a small, Western restaurant.
Currently, Hotaru is in Tokyo to look for her Okita-sama.
